The history of the Christmas bauble

The tradition of decorating Christmas trees with baubles has a long history. Originally, the Christmas tree was developed from the medieval paradise tree, which was set up on December 24th during the paradise games. Before the 19th century, this tree was mainly decorated with apples, nuts, cookies and sweets.

The idea of decorating the Christmas tree with glass baubles dates back to the 19th century. The first glass Christmas baubles were made by tradesmen in Thüringen. Legend has it that an impoverished glassblower from Lauscha used glass baubles instead of expensive walnuts and apples in 1847. This tradition has evolved since then and is now widespread throughout the world.
